Kylie’s Dog Friendly Birthday Cake!

To show you that I am not all bark and no bite, my first post is about my dog Kylie and her 5th birthday party! I love dogs. I am passionate about dog rescue and adoption. Kylie, a Springer Spaniel - Border Collie mix, was rescued from a kill shelter days before she was to be “put down.” Luckily, she was saved and is now a loving member of my family. Kylie had a rough start in life…she deserves to celebrate her birthday…wouldn’t you agree!?

To celebrate Kylie’s 5th birthday, which just so happens to be on September 7th, I made her a low-fat, cream cheese, dog friendly birthday cake! The cake, which is easy to make, even has doggie friendly icing! I kept the party simple…family only. Though Kylie didn’t care much  for her purple birthday hat, she was a good sport! Kiwi, Kylie’s sister, didn’t care who’s birthday it was. All she wanted was to chow down on cream cheese cake and that is exactly what she did! Why not start planning YOUR dog’s birthday party today!

  • 3/4 Cup of all natural, no sugar added, apple sauce
  • 2 Large eggs
  • 4 Ounces Low fat cream cheese
  • 1 Tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1/4 Cup Honey
  • 2 Cups Unbleached white flour
  • 2 Tsp Baking powder
  • 1 Tsp Baking soda
  • 1/4 Cup Wheat Germ

Icing Ingredients (Icing is optional):

  • 7 to 10 Dog bones (such as Milkbones)
  • Water

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all wet ingredients in a medium sized bowl. In a separate bowl, mix all dry ingredients. Slowly combine all ingredients together and mix well. Pour batter into a 9 x 13 inch cake pan. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool completely.

Icing Directions:

Put dog bones into a food processor and chop until fine. Pour into small bowl. Slowly add water (start with 1/4 cup) and stir until an icing like consistency is achieved. Use your best judgement!
